5 Christian Asian mental health events in the month of May
scheduled at 8 different times, both online and offline
Hello friends, this update has 5 events that I’ll be attending that are related to Christian Asian mental health, or I could title-case capitalize it as Christian Asian Mental Health, though that’d make it more formal than it actually is, because not every one of these events have that formal organizational relationship. (So, be that as it may, I’m more about being personally in relationship with people, rather than having formal agreements executed, if that’s okay with you.)
Here’s the event list, followed by more info & descriptions:
May 8th - Korean American Roundtable on Faith and Mental Health [Los Angeles]
May 16th - Communities of Hope Conference [Pasadena]
May 23rd - Lessons from a Mental Health Crisis [online]
May 29th - Asian Exclusion and the Church [Los Angeles & online]
May 8-29 Asian Parenting Seminars every Wednesday evening in May [online]
Communities of Hope Conference (on May 16th) is the inaugural conference of the Asian American Well-being Collaboratory at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, gathering Asian American pastors, ministry leaders and mental health practitioners based in Southern California to encourage one another through conversations on well-being within the Asian American church and contexts.
On Thursday, May 23rd, join the Mental Health Webinar, “We are Not Immune: Lessons from a Mental Health Crisis,” with Dr. Matthew D. Kim, hosted by Asian American Christian Collaborative. Register for this free webinar.
Something happened 100 years ago that deeply affects us Asian Americans today, our churches, our faith practices, our mental health, and more. “Asian Exclusion and the Church: Ripples from the 1924 Immigration Act” is a free hybrid event, convening a gathering of scholars, pastors, and faith leaders from the Asian American Christian community. Join virtually online anywhere or in-person at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, California—REGISTER NOW.
Engage with the Asian Parenting Seminars online every Wednesday evening in the month of May, hosted by Catalyst Wellness Alliance and its sponsors & partners. Our team is working on recording every seminar for on-demand viewing; hope we don’t run into technical glitches. Register for Free at AsianParenting.org.
Going from Information to Implementation
One thing I’ve been thinking hard about is going from education and information, to something more along the lines of implementation. Because I have a thinking wavelength that’s conceptual and theoretical, I do my best work at strategizing for mental health ministry for every Asian and Asian American church; but, I also need people who are strong at implementation and execution, to better operationalize this for the thousands of Asian American churches in the United States.
Do you know someone who can be a conversational partner with me to help me take the next steps? Please contact me via dj@catalystwa.org or 949-243-7260.
While there’s certainly value in learning more about mental health in Asian American Christian faith communities, and sharing resources, I’m convinced that mental health care and support for individuals and families can bring hope and healing to many people through local churches.
Thank you for letting me share. I’m eager to hear your thoughts on this.
